Those Little Itches

Do you ever get those little itches? You know the kind – just a small pinprick of a tickle, on your leg or arm? One that just has to be scratched?

Most of the time, you could swear that you’ve got an insect or bug of sorts crawling on you – the itch is so real. But when you look, of course, it’s nothing.

In Hawaii, we’ve learned that when you get those itches and feel like something is crawling on you, it probably is. I don’t know how many times I’ve caught myself absent-mindedly scratching an itch, only to look down and discover that it was actually an ant, a little spider, or some unidentifiable green or black bug.

It’s the itches in places we’d prefer not to have little creatures crawling on us that are the most unnerving. In our hair, under our clothes, or in that unreachable place on our backs. Imaginations start to wander as the itch continues to meander…what exactly is the culprit of the itch today? We’ve seen way too many creepy bugs (centipedes, tiny scorpions, praying mantises, and beautiful-but-big-and-icky spiders) that literally make our skin crawl with the thought of them climbing up our legs.

And now I’m so itchy writing this piece, I have to stop.
