Living ecologically sustainably in Hawaii really changed us for the better. We think twice about everything we do now, from turning off the water while we lather up in the shower, to choosing what we buy carefully to reduce packaging and waste.

<o :p> </o>

And on our way to <st1 :place>Asia</st1>, we were very concerned about the fact that you can’t drink the water. We were looking at being relegated to buying large quantities of water in 500ml-1liter plastic bottles. And all in a place where “recycling” is truly a foreign word.

I cringed at the thought of throwing away plastic bottle after plastic bottle, not to mention the money we would spend for this privilege; the privilege of having clean water.

<o :p> </o>

But we managed to find a viable alternative to this wastage: a way to sterilize water on the go, and all in a small compact solution that easily fit into our bags; SteriPEN was our savior.

<o :p> </o>

SteriPEN uses ultraviolet light to eliminate all the bad stuff that makes water harmful; from bacteria to viruses. The only pre-requisite is that the water be clear to begin with – no muddy creek water allowed. So whatever came out of the taps where we were traveling was more than sufficient.

Initially we were a little apprehensive about using a tiny little light to sterilize water that had the very real potential to make us incredibly ill (even fatally so), and then to have the guts to drink said water. But we’re still here to tell the story, so all I can say is…it worked!

<o :p> </o>

Although we had to pay about $100 for the SteriPEN, we never had to purchase water in countries where that’s conventionally the only option, and of course saved (and continue to save) the consumption of hundreds of plastic bottles. It took a little extra planning and effort to sterilize a few liters of water (at a whopping 90 seconds a pop) each morning and evening, and then to carry around a bottle of water all the time, but what a savings is brought both our pockets and the environment.

<o :p> </o>

Let’s do some math:

We were on the road through <st1 :place>Asia</st1> for about 45 days.

At approximately 2 liters of water consumed each per day, we consumed 180 liters of water.

Most bottled water came in 500-750ml quantities, which meant the equivalent of 270-360 bottles of water was consumed.

The cost of a bottle of water averaged out to be a little less than 50cents. Which meant that we saved about $150 (300 bottles times 50cents) in buying water.

The SteriPEN more than paid for itself during our Asian trip. And now we have it for backcountry camping, and future travels through countries where the water isn’t safe to drink. It’s all gravy from here on.

<o :p> </o>

And yes – we did falter here and there. Some days we didn’t have enough water with us, or forgot to bring it along. During our entire trip, we had to buy a few bottles: 11 to be exact. Which is still better than 360 if you ask me.

<o :p> </o>

We even sweetened the environmentally friendly factor by purchasing it with the solar charging case. Even when the sun wasn’t shining to charge the batteries, we could plug the adapter in and recharge the batteries that way without wasting disposable batteries.

<o :p> </o>

If you are planning a trip that may take you into an area where the water is not drinkable, consider the alternative to buying (and wasting) your way to hydration. I can say from experience: the little light works. Save a few bucks and a few bottles too.

Sadly due to Dengue Fever getting in our way (!), we only had one full day to spend in <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> between the four-day train ride from Chiang Mai and our flights to <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Australia</st1>.

Interestingly, we weren’t sure if this was a curse or a blessing; it appears that people either love or hate <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1>. Here are some reasons why people could both love or hate it:

<o :p> </o>

It’s a country that is a big city. If you’re not a city person, then <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> consequently wouldn’t be your cup of tea. If you are a city person, then <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> is paradise, full of life, diversity, and brimming with “success”. Either way, I have to say that there are many huge parks, beaches, and resort-like areas that even a non-city-person should have been able to find something satisfying in <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1>.

It’s very expensive. I can’t find many positive points to this reality, except to observe that the biggest complainers of cost in Singapore are those that just came from considerably less expensive areas of Asia (like Thailand), and go through some serious sticker shock. When you compare the prices in <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> to those of any world-class large city, then it’s actually not that expensive – in fact in some cases it is way cheaper. <o :p></o>

It’s very clean. Now I would view this observation as a positive one through and through, however naysayers of <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> cite the cleanliness as a kind of sterile lack of personality. I say it’s better than garbage and garbage-related pests lining all the city streets. <o :p></o>

It’s very crowded. In just five minutes of strolling through Bugis market (the city’s largest outdoor marketplace), we were poked, prodded, tripped over, pushed, beaten up, and generally manhandled more than our entire trip through the rest of <st1 :place>Asia</st1>! In trying to board the public bus, an old woman hit Kelly repeatedly with her cane trying to push by us as we clumsily discerned how much we had to pay the driver, that he has bruises. Yup. It’s crowded. But again – welcome to the big city; you either succumb and love it or fight it all the way.

It’s very fashionable. It appears that in Singapore, even people who aren’t trying look like a million bucks. Singapore is the height of fashion, and we felt a little grimy and tired looking in comparison to our haute-couture citizens.<o :p></o>

It’s very multi-cultural. Almost nobody from <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> is actually from <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1>. Hmmm….memories of <st1 :city></st1><st1 :place>Toronto</st1>. You walk down the street and see people from <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Thailand</st1>, <st1 :place></st1><st1 :city>Mayalsia</st1>, <st1 :country-region>India</st1>, <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>China</st1>, and the western world. Many people speak English, and the rest usually speak Chinese. It was refreshing to have a greater chance of being able to communicate with strangers in English after traveling through areas where we were in a minority. It was also refreshing to see so many different cultures (and foods!) collide and co-exist. Similar to <st1 :place></st1><st1 :city>Toronto</st1>, <st1 :country-region>Singapore</st1> has pockets dedicated to many cultures: Lucky Chinatown, Little India, Little Italy, and so on. <o :p></o>

It’s very high-tech. From the huge number of retailers of the latest consumer electronics, to the awesome public transportation system, technology is in abundance in <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1>. Taking the bus was a treat. The bus stop we waited at was at a convergence point of about eight buses. An LED sign gave us up-to-the-minute updates as to exactly when each bus would arrive at the stop. This ain’t no pre-posted schedule either; it is GPS technology at its best. Once on-board the bus (bruises and all), we decided to climb up to the second floor (it was a double-decker). Before we did so though, we could see on another LED screen just how many seats were vacant so as not to waste a trip up the stairs if it was too crowded. <o :p></o>

It’s very safe. I guess the only people who wouldn’t like this attribute are the drug dealers (or users) who face a death penalty if caught trafficking or in possession. Otherwise the ability to walk around late at night (as we did when we got off the train at 11:30pm with no place to stay and over an hour of wandering in search of accommodation), without risk of being mugged or otherwise mutilated is a treat. <o :p></o>

After only one day in <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1>, striking up conversations with extremely helpful shop-keepers and taxi-drivers, and wandering the streets and admiring the scenery, we certainly felt at home. In many ways it was a pleasant reminder of <st1 :city></st1><st1 :place>Toronto</st1>, and helped us to reminisce and enjoy a little piece of home while still being so far away from it. <st1 :country-region></st1><st1 :place>Singapore</st1> is most-certainly on our “must-return-to” list. <o :p></o>
