Rain, Rain, Go Away….I mean Stay! I mean…

So Kelly’s parents are here to visit us, and we are delighted to have our first visitors from home join us in our lives abroad. We are proudly showing off our Australian digs, friends, and landscapes to them. Bracken the kangaroo and Poppy the wombat (both rescued animals that are being rehabilitated to the wild) have both made appearances, showing off their unique Australian-ness to our Canadian family.

But sadly, amidst our Australian pride and in this the dawn of summer, we have seen nothing but rain and cold blustery winds. For four days straight it rained, two of which we didn’t leave the house. Their home on Vancouver Island (currently on winter’s doorstep) is warmer than it is here!

However in Australia, and Victoria in particular where over a decade of drought has ravaged the land, you don’t complain about the rain. It is so sorely needed, and you can almost hear the soil sighing with relief when it is soaked by the rain, and the dry creek beds start to flow.

But sadly, we can’t seem to convince Kelly’s parents that the week before they arrived the weather was hot and dry! They aren’t even sure they’re in Australia any more. We are huddled in our cold cottage under multiple layers of clothes, with heaters on all sides of us.

The good news is that the cold fronts (we were simultaneously hit with two coming from opposite directions) are due to move away this week, and we hope to see the temperatures climb back into the 20s (at least). There is time yet! I think they’re sick of wearing all their layers and hoping to break out the summer clothes for one last hurrah before they are packed away for the Canadian winter they will return to.

For anybody else who is interested in coming to visit us (or anybody else) in Australia, the time is ripe! Quantas is having a great sale…return tickets for under $1,500. Check it out!
