Picking up Change

By theprofessionalhobo ~ March 19th, 2008. Filed under: Hawaii.

I don’t remember so much spare change on the streets of Canada. But here in Hawaii, loose change is everywhere. Pennies, nickels, dimes, and even quarters litter the streets. If you walk with eyes down, you could get rich picking up spare change.

Initially I let the pennies go. Even the odd nickel or dime I’d just cruise by because I was in a rush to go somewhere and figured that somebody else might be able to use it more so than I.

But as I continue to discover more and more change, I’ve started to pick it up. And cents start to amount to dollars pretty quickly! I’ve found pennies that have obviously been left on the sidewalk or road so long that they’re no longer even recognizable (or acceptable) as pennies any more.

I wonder why spare change is left here like this? People scan beaches with metal detectors looking for anything of value from jewelry to coins. I wonder if these people stoop to pick up coins on the street too.

Money is money. And (especially as a Professional Hobo), I’m not above keeping my eyes peeled on the ground and picking it up! The view isn’t always grand, but the payoff is.
