Appreciating the Little Things on the Road

By theprofessionalhobo ~ February 28th, 2008. Filed under: Hawaii.

The other day, I realized I hadn’t enjoyed a day at the beach in a week. I hadn’t scuba dived, snorkeled, boogie boarded, or sunbathed on the small patches of golden sand found in the area.

My days during that week had seen me working on a few projects where I am staying (in return for accommodation), writing a fair bit, shopping and running errands, snoozing, and reading.

“What are you doing, Nora”?! I said in a panic. “You’re in bloody Hawaii! People come here for one or two weeks a year to enjoy something you could take advantage of every day. Take advantage of it already!”

Had I fallen into a trap? Did I get sucked in the same rat race that I was running at home, adhering to a routine of get up/go to work/go home/go to sleep?

I took some time to ponder this idea. What is the rat race? What do we object to in our daily routines, and how can we escape the pit falls?

And then I realized that while I was pontificating on the meaning of life and work, I was lying in a hammock, gazing at a palm tree gently blowing in the wind, and watching an unbelievably gorgeous sunset over the ocean. In February.

Beach days or not; hiking around town or relaxing at home; working and interacting with people or snoozing the afternoon away; I realized that all I have to do to appreciate the life I am living is to do just that…appreciate it.

I encourage you to see the little things for what they are and revel in the collage of tiny experiences that make up our daily life.
