Rolling With The Punches – Change of Plans
By theprofessionalhobo ~ March 16th, 2007. Filed under: Toronto (still/again).
As if to accentuate the entire point of this website (Life Happens) in living colour, we haven’t even left Toronto yet and we’re learning one of the biggest lessons we’ll need for our trip: Rolling With The Punches.
Our trip plans have changed numerous times since we set out on this course. But every time it came down to the crunch in terms of “signing on the dotted line”, we weren’t quite comfortable in doing so.
And now we know why!
Kelly’s family lives in Edmonton Alberta, and his brother Kevin is getting married in June. We were already lamenting that we weren’t going to get a chance to see his family and were going to miss the wedding due to our travel plans, until Kelly was recently asked to be the best man.
So while we were busy planning our trip, life was happening in Alberta with Kelly’s family! And we’d like to be a part of that.
So our new plans are as follows:
On Easter weekend, we will hop on a train across Canada. We will get on and off as we please, stopping to visit and connect with all parts of our beautiful country. We’ll go right out to Vancouver so we can enjoy the Rocky Mountain pass – some of the most beautiful landscape by train – then turn around to wind up in Edmonton.
We’ll stay with family in Edmonton through the wedding, and likely for a big chunk of the summer. We’re very excited about taking lots of trips into Jasper & the surrounding areas, as the mountains are where we feel most at home.
In fact, if we so desire, we might even spend a chunk of the summer living in Jasper too! Towards the end of the summer, we expect to head out to British Columbia, and spend some time on Vancouver Island and possibly trek through the interior of BC too.
Then in the fall, when much of the rainy season is over in Costa Rica and when the weather starts to turn yucky here in Canada, we’ll head down south and enjoy what Central America has to offer, starting in Costa Rica.
This whole change of plans has actually been quite liberating….to have the absolute freedom to switch gears so drastically has enabled me to understand and embody a lot of what this trip is about: discovering possibilities, new avenues, and exploring. And I expect that while we’re on the road in foreign countries, our newfound ability to Roll With The Punches and adapt to new circumstances will be invaluable.
